Astro Towing has proudly been serving Saskatchewan for over 45 years. We are a locally owned and operated company providing emergency roadside service, towing, accident and abandoned vehicle recovery, and hauling services to our community and partners. As we continue to grow, we are looking to add a Financial Controller to our team. This position is responsible for the overall financial health of the organization by bringing a systematic and disciplined approach to the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes. The ideal candidate is an experienced senior accountant who possesses a thorough knowledge of accounting procedures, sound judgement, and experience leading and coaching a professional team to exceed expectations.
In this role, the successful candidate will:
- Oversee all accounting department activities, processes and procedures including accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank reconciliation, cash application/management, payroll and cost accounting
- Direct the Senior Accounting Technician and Accounting Clerk in accounting procedures and accounting system applications
- Maintain proper, accurate records and accounting controls
- Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
- Prepare regular monthly reports including income statements, balance sheets and any reporting required for financial institutions and management; checking information for accuracy and making adjustments as required
- Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
- Meet regularly with the President, consulting CFO, and other senior managers to review financial reports, operational reports/results, including variances to budget
- Identify opportunities for improvement and recommend appropriate action as required
- Liaise with financial institutions for financing and reporting, and outside accountants and lawyers
- Oversee all year-end reporting, preparation, and requirements to ensure timely submission to all required government agencies, financial institutions, and third-party accounting firms (including minute books, annual returns, dividends, profit-share, etc.)
- Ensure compliance with all federal (i.e., CRA), provincial and municipal regulations, requirements, and submissions with respect to payroll remittances, WCB, GST, property tax assessments; acting as liaison with all agencies as required
- Support the development and implementation of the strategic plan
- Lead and implement all financial activities to support the achievement of the organization’s strategic objectives
- Work collaboratively with other employees to implement projects and initiatives that advance the organization’s strategic priorities
- Lead and manage direct reports including coaching, recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee development, employee recognition and general support
- Manage and direct ad hoc responsibilities as they arise
The following qualifications are required:
- Minimum 8 years of experience in financial management including a strong background in finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles
- Valid CPA designation preferred with demonstrated technical accounting knowledge and experience
- Demonstrated ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information
- Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment
- Excellent communication skills with strong, written and verbal skills
- Well-developed listening, coaching, delegating, training and mentoring skills
- Ability to work independently under pressure
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills; the ability to think and plan ahead and manage multiple projects, prioritize and meet deadlines
- Excellent decision-making and time-management skills
- Strong attention to detail to maintain organizational systems
- Clear criminal record check
